You’ve taken your seat at a Korean restaurant, but no water has arrived. Should you keep waiting or get it yourself?
Both arrangements exist. Staff may bring water and cups, they may already be on the table, or you may need to use a self-service area.
Start with the table
Our contributor in Korea describes a familiar routine: staff ask how many people are dining and show them to a table. Water and cups may then be brought over, or they may already be waiting on the table.
That is a familiar experience, not a rule for every restaurant. If you have waited and still have no water, check the table and nearby signs.
Look for “물은 셀프”
“물은 셀프” means “Please help yourself to water.” You may also see the shorter “물 셀프.”
If you spot this sign, look for the designated water and cup area and help yourself. The Korea Tourism Organization also describes restaurants where customers serve themselves water and side dishes. VISITKOREA restaurant guide
No sign? Ask
Water not arriving does not automatically mean it is self-service. If the arrangement is unclear, ask a staff member:
- 물은 셀프인가요? — Is water self-service?
- 물 주세요. — Water, please.
- 물 어디서 가져오면 돼요? — Where can I get water?
- 컵 주세요. — A cup, please.
If your table has a call button or an ordering tablet with a staff-call option, you can use it to ask for help. See our guide to Korean restaurant call buttons.
At highway rest stops and cafeterias
Our contributor has also encountered separate drinking-water dispensers at Korean highway rest stops and cafeterias. In these settings, diners get water themselves rather than having it brought with their food.
Look for a designated water area and follow the instructions there. Layouts and service arrangements can vary between facilities.
Is the water free?
The Korea Tourism Organization describes requests for additional restaurant water as having no extra charge. However, do not assume that bottled water or sparkling water listed with a price is also free. Check the menu before ordering those products. VISITKOREA restaurant guide
The simple routine is: check your table, look for a self-service sign, and ask if you’re unsure.
